For doing sketching in solidworks, we first need to understand the planes.
PLANE - Plane is defined as a 2-D surface on which a sketch is made. In solidworks, there are three basic planes viz. front plane, top plane, side plane. These planes makes it possible to do sketching in 3-directions.
Sketching- There are two types of sketching possible in Solidworks viz. 2D sketching and 3D sketching.
2D Sketching is the sketching which is done on a plane. All points and trajectories lies in a single plane. It is used to create all the 3-D surfaces and geometries. Most of the 3-D modelling is done with the help of 2-D sketching. For example- circle, rectangle, etc.
3-D Sketching is used to create 3-D sketches i.e. sketches which does not lie in a single plane. It is used to create complex figures. Examples of 3-D sketching is spiral which is used to create Spring.
